ABSTRACT

Objective To explore the effectiveness, feasibility and suitability of the guideline for nasogastric tube feeding in adult patients. Methods Based on the Ottawa Model of Research Use as framework,we screened relevant evidence from guidelines, and developed new nasogastric tube feeding nursing procedure.Nursing knowledge, the rate of compliance to new procedure and the incidence of complications of nasogastric tube feeding were used to evaluate the clinical effects of the guideline. Results Nurses' knowledge increased significantly(P<0.05).Nurses had a high degree of implementation of the new procedure, with the rate of over 85%.Compared with the control group, the rate of complications of nasogastric tube feeing in the experimental group was lower than that in the control group.Especially, the rates of reflux and aspiration were significantly lower(P<0.05).Both rates of tube shedding and skin damage in the intervention group were decreased significantly(P<0.05).Conclusion The nasal feeding nursing guideline in our clinical scenarios has its effectiveness, feasibility and suitability.

ABSTRACT

@#Objective To evaluate the effect of different types of tube feeding on swallowing function of stroke patients. Methods 60 patients with dysphagia post stroke were divided into observation group and control group with 30 cases in each group. The control group received indwelling nasogastric tube feeding, and the observation group received intermittent nasogastric tube feeding. They were assessed with Kubota Water Swallow Test (WST) and VGF on the 1st day and 30th day after admission. Results The scores of drinking test and VGF were better in the observation group than in the control group (P<0.05) on the 30th day. Conclusion Long-term nasogatric tube feeding is effective on dysphagia in stroke patients.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary soluble fibers added to nasogastric tube-fed formulas and to compare the difference of the degree of diarrhea according to the amount of dietary soluble fibers in stroke or traumatic brain injury patients for comprehensive rehabilitative management. METHOD: Fifty-two stroke or traumatic brain injury patients fed by nasogastric tube due to dysphagia were included. They received fiber-free formulas for the first 30 days and then they were randomly assigned to three groups, including the control (fiber-free) group, moderate fiber (3.5 gm fiber/L) group and high fiber (7 gm fiber/L) group. Each group received their respective formulas for the next 30 days. We compared diarrhea score and frequency. RESULTS: In the control group, the degree of diarrhea was not changed with time. In the moderate and high fiber groups, daily diarrhea score and monthly diarrhea frequency were low compared to the control group (p<0.05). Also, the incidence of pseudomembraneous colitis was low in fiber groups. CONCLUSION: We concluded that adding dietary soluble fibers to nasogastric tube-fed formulas may be helpful to reduce the diarrhea and the development of pseudomembraneous colitis. The proper fiber amount will be determined through the following more case studies.

ABSTRACT

0.05).Conclusion: Enteral nutrition may improve the nutrition status. The naso-jejunum tube feeding has no advantage to nasogastric tube feeding in our patients. The route of enteral nutrition should be selected according to the individual condition and local nosocomial experience.
